Truck games for toddlers

And preschoolers, ages 2 to 5: how to choose a good one

Many small children love trucks: the big wheels, the noise, the work they do. A truck game can be a lovely first game, as long as it is made for a child who cannot read yet.

Here is what we look for in a truck game for 2 and 3 year olds and for preschoolers up to 5, and what we avoid.

It talks, so the child does not need to read

A two-year-old cannot follow written instructions. A good game says every step out loud in a warm, calm voice: which truck to tap, which tool to take, what happens next. The child plays on their own and you do not have to sit next to them reading the screen.

Big, simple actions

Small fingers drag and tap, they do not aim. Look for large trucks and tools, one clear thing to do at a time, and a hint when the child gets stuck, for example a hand that shows where to drag the brush.

No timers, no losing

At this age a countdown or a "game over" screen brings tears, not learning. In a good toddler game nothing can go wrong: every try works, and every finished job ends with a cheer.

No ads and no tricks

Ads in a children's game lead small fingers to other apps and to things that cost money. Choose games without ads, where every purchase and every link outside the game sits behind a parental gate that a child cannot pass.

Caring, not crashing

Trucks do not have to smash into each other to be fun. Washing off the mud, pumping up a flat tyre or changing a broken headlamp gives a child the joy of fixing things and helping a friend. These small jobs also teach cause and effect: the brush cleans, the pump fills, the truck is happy again.

A calm end

A game that never ends is hard to put down. We like games with a natural finish, like a day that ends with the trucks going to sleep. It makes "time to stop" easier for everyone.

Play together

Even a game that talks is better with you nearby. Name the colours of the trucks, ask what the truck needs, cheer together at the end. Ten minutes like this is a small conversation, not just screen time.

Our truck game: Truck Doctor

We made Truck Doctor with these rules in mind. Six truck friends slid down a hill and need the garage. Your child washes off the mud, pumps up a flat tyre, changes a broken headlamp and wakes a sleepy battery. A kind voice guides every step, and at night the whole garage goes to sleep.

There are no ads, no timers and no losing. Some features require a subscription, and a free trial may be offered. Purchases sit behind a parental gate. Truck Doctor is on iPhone, iPad and Android.
